Electricity market: Analysis of electricity industry data to support a merger assessment by the NZ Commerce Commission.

Maritime data: Advising the Pacific Community (SPC) on potential uses of ship-tracking data to measure trade and maritime transport activity in the Pacific (with Spatial Economics).

Evaluation

Transport safety: Evaluating the impacts of historic changes to driver licensing rules on road safety outcomes, for the NZ Ministry of Transport. This involved analysis of a large dataset of driver licensing records and information about road crashes.

Local government: Developing a framework and using data analysis to help evaluate Auckland Council’s Safeswim water safety and quality programme (with Dovetail).

Economics of international cooperation: As part of a multidisciplinary team, developed and implemented economic frameworks for evaluating the benefits and costs of programmes run by the International Atomic Energy Agency to promote knowledge transfer and skills development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Forecasting

Government revenue forecasting: A full re-development of the model used by the NZ Ministry of Transport to forecast government revenues from fuel taxes and road user charges. This included developing econometric forecasting models for revenue streams and embedding these models in an R-based forecasting system that can be used to analyse and compare forecast scenarios.

Aviation forecasting: Developing models to forecast passenger numbers and aircraft movements for various airports in Australia (with Fresh Info).

Population and household forecasting: Peer review of models used for local population and household projections, for Taupō District Council.

Data communication

Home loans insights: Analysis and visualisation of data to understand patterns and trends in interest rates for home lending, to support the NZ Commerce Commission’s market study of retail banking.

Construction industy case study: A detailed review and summary of data about the impacts of international migration on the New Zealand construction industry for the NZ Productivity Commission.

Arts funding: Developing data visualisations to show sources and uses of arts funding, for Auckland Council (with Dovetail).

Health sector

Oral health programme: Analysis of oral health data to help evaluate a trial programme of supervised toothbrushing in Northland schools, for the Clare Foundation (with Dovetail).

Nursing pilot evaluation: Outcomes and activity data analysis to support an evaluation of a rheumatic fever nursing pilot programme in South Auckland (with Dovetail).

Mental health evaluation: Analysis of service and outcomes data collected by a pilot mental health treatment programme for the NZ Health Promotion Authority (with The Knowledge Institute).

Competition economics

Merger assessment: Assisted the NZ Commerce Commission to assess economic aspects of merger applications in various markets including electricity, consumer products, and manufacturing.

Competition research: Provided data analysis and tools to help the NZ Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment understand the state of competition in New Zealand industries.

Competition assessment: Worked for the NZ Commerce Commission to analyse a large dataset of retail pricing activity by supermarkets to support a study of competition in the grocery sector.

Transport sector

Land transport policy review: Contributed extensive data analysis to support a review of the effectiveness of the 2018 Government Policy Statement on Land Transport in changing transport outcomes in New Zealand (with Dovetail and Mackie Research).

Transport modelling review: An independent review for the NZ Ministry of Transport of models and processes used for transport revenue and expenditure analysis.

Impaired driving: Quantitative and economic analysis of outcomes of programmes to reduce rates of impaired driving, for Health New Zealand (with Dovetail).

Non-profit sector

Evaluation framework: Provided economic input to the development of a framework to evaluate an urban development intervention programme, for the Barnard van Leer Foundation (with Dovetail).

Aged care programme evaluation: Analysis of service and activity data to support an evaluation of a publicly-funded support programme for aged care in Australia (with Charles Darwin University).

Addiction support evaluation: Data and economic analysis to evaluate outcomes of an addiction support programme provided by Higher Ground.
